Modern Beach Wedding in Hawaii with a Tropical Boho Theme

There is nothing more beautiful than a beach wedding with a tropical boho theme and this wedding was everything. Bree and Jason met in August, had their first date in August, and married in August, picking a meaningful date to them both. Along for the ride and to take the stunningly beautiful photography and videography was David and Ena from MihociStudios.

What we loved most about this wedding was how the theme incorporated personal elements, so the couple could share their story and make it their own. Bree explains, “We had a memory table to honor friends and family who are no longer with us with candles and photos of them next to our guestbook. Because our first date was surfing and swimming at the beach, and both grew up beach kids, we wanted to incorporate our favorite beaches and the stories behind them. So for each table, we had a different beach with photos of us there together or from childhood with stories of that particular beach and its significance to us.”

And the attention to details didn’t stop there — their color scheme was made up of a neutral champagne, rose pinks and burnt orange to pop against the lush green mountains, palm trees, and turquoise ocean. Playing into the theme and the colors, Kahihae Florals was incredible and Bree says she really understood her vision for encapsulating a tropical bouquet. “We used a combination of monstera and palm leaves, ferns, orchids, ginger, protea, bird of paradise and anthurium. I love palms and monstera leaves, so I had large leaves with a single anthurium or ginger flower for each table setting to bring the lush green to the tables.”

Instead of having only a traditional wedding cake, Bree and Jason offered guests a dessert bar too where they were instructed to “Treat Yo Self” with a variety of choices to choose from. But, first let’s talk cake: it was two-tiered with two flavors — coconut cake with strawberry cream filling and Devil’s food cake with chocolate cream filling. As for the dessert bar, they had cupcakes in a variety of flavors: yellow butter cake with lilikoi cream filling, coconut cake with coconut cream filling, and the ever-popular red velvet cake with cream cheese filling. They also had panna cotta in strawberry, mango, and green tea, and cake shooters made of Devil’s food cake with cookies and cream filling, vanilla chocolate marble cake with raspberry cream filling, and lemon cake with lemon cream filling.

When asked what her favorite memory was, Bree said, “The day flies by, but I think my favorite memory was our first look. All the anticipation and nerves were settled and we had a very intimate moment to truly just appreciate one another without interruption and all eyes on us. I think we both could take each other in and know we were both there for each other. It made going down the aisle less stressful and scary.”

For Bree and Jason, the music selections were also fun and appropriately picked for them. Bree explains, “I had a string quartet to set the mood with some film scores and the Jurassic Park Theme since we got married where they filmed the movies, along with some love songs for guests to arrive as they arrived. For walking down the aisle though, we had the wedding party walk down to: Can’t Help Falling in Love With You by Elvis and Moon River by Mancini. My dad walked me down to Hoppípolla by Sigur Rós.

“And just like our film scores with Jurassic Park, we wanted to continue having some fun and entered with some aviator glasses to the Top Gun Theme.”

As for their first dance, they went with a fitting selection for their song — “Whenever my husband, Jason and I had a rough day or needed some connection, we always played The Stable Song by Gregory Alan Isokav and would dance with each other.“

With such a beautiful and meaningful wedding day, Bree offers other couples getting married three points of advice:

“1. Hire a day-of-planner so you don't have to think on the day and they will handle the schedule of the day getting all the family, the wedding parties and you where you need to be.

“2. Make the day about your love. At the end of the day it is not for anyone else but you and your future spouse both celebrating your love with the people you love. Tailor it to your love story, to what represents you both and remember what is most important for you as a couple.

“3. Even with all the planning and plan Bs and Cs, there will be fires and things that go wrong. Laugh and look at it as a charm that makes your day unique and all the more special.”
