Just Before Sunset at Stansbury Island this Couple Had their Gorgeous Engagement Session
All great relationships start on Tinder, right? That’s what our newest bride-to-be Kirstin jokes, of course, ‘cause that’s how she met Trey. And it’s that same sense of humor and appreciation for just going with the flow that we love about Kirstin and Trey.
When we first connected with their photographer, Elli Hurt from Scarlet Oak Studio, we were taken by the engagement session photographs, there was no question — they were taken at Stansbury Island in Utah and their second half (post outfit change) was just before sunset… gorgeous, I know. But it was what Hurt shared with us that really blew us away. “Kirstin’s white dress actually ripped down the entire side just minutes before our session. We were able to safety pin it up and had to pose and frame in camera to hide the slit the entire time. [It was] such a crazy circumstance. But it just goes to show how amazing of a bride she was to not let that get in the way of enjoying their moment to celebrate and it still ended in a beautiful [engagement] shoot.” So right away, we knew that was a bride-to-be we had to get to know. Luckily for us, she shared all the details of not only their engagement session, but also their relationship highlights, which you’ll see goes to show that time and distance knows no limits when it comes to true love.
“We met at one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Memphis, The Majestic Grille, for dinner. I was living in Memphis. Trey was living in Jackson, TN, 90 minutes away. He’d gotten the restaurant suggestion from his best friend who spent some time in Memphis and it happened to be my fave too!” Kirstin shares.
That first date led to plenty more, and traveling remained not at issue for this couple. In fact, she tells us that it’s their favorite thing to do. “Our families are in Upstate NY and Kansas City so we are always traveling to see them for various occasions and holidays. We also love to keep up with milestones for our friends, ski/snowboard, and adventure in general. We have been to 16 states together!”
Well, we know about New York, Missouri, and definitely Tennessee, but there was also Texas (among the remaining 12 states not named) and as for Texas, well that’s where their proposal story happened. At the end of 2022 and into 2023, Trey started asking Kirstin about taking a trip to Memphis to see his best friend. She tells us that normally she would’ve been on board, but had started a new job and was pretty stressed so she said there was no way she could consider that right now. (He wanted to propose in Memphis where they met.) Andddd that’s where Texas comes in…
As Kirstin remembers it, “Come February, our 3 year anniversary was approaching and he said he was going to plan something fun for us to do to celebrate. Normally, I’d be all over that and want to know details (or plan it myself), but again, with new job business, I was like ok sure sounds great. On Saturday, February 3, he told me we were going to go to brunch then go on a walk around town. I guess an engagement crossed my mind, but I really tried not to think about it too much because it had crossed my mind too many times before. A girl can drive herself nuts with that stuff! So we went to brunch in downtown Dallas on the rooftop of the Statler Hotel. It was a gorgeous chilly day and we sat inside one of their igloos on the rooftop. Towards the end, he suggested we get a photo, which was shocking because he hates how many photos I make us take, but at the time, I thought it was sweet to honor our anniversary. I asked a couple dining nearby to take it, but then the waitress swooped in and said she would instead. As we were positioning ourselves for the photo, he got down on one knee. I was totally shocked and kept saying ‘Are you for real?’ The bartender sprayed champagne and guests all around us were cheering. They got some excellent photos!
“Then afterwards, I continued to be in shock while he suggested we drive around town and find fun spots to celebrate. We had moved to Dallas just 6 months prior and loved exploring. He drove us to one of our favorite outdoor bars called the Katy Trail Ice House. His cousin, Carli, met us at the front (there was a long line), and brought us back to our table. I thought that was a little suspicious, but she lived in Dallas too so I thought that was sweet he had her there so we could celebrate together. She led us back to an entire area where 30 of our family and friends had traveled in to surprise me. Our parents, siblings, best friends, grandparents, you name it. It was AMAZING!”
And the good times and photos continued for this couple, taking these stunning engagement session photos in Utah. “We wanted photos in the area we were getting married and I’d seen people do them in this area of UT. The salt lake backdrop with the mountains is gorgeous. I knew I wanted to wear white and Trey be in a suit. And then do a pop of color for the photos with a lighter background.”
They’re planning a spring 2024 wedding at Snowbasin Resort and have really enjoyed coordinating all the logistics, “putting together an awesome weekend of events for the people we love the most!”
