A Warm and Elegant Coastal Wedding with a Nod to Clean Water and Our Environment

This autumn wedding was all about coastal life and we cannot get enough of the simple elegance and uniqueness of their theme and vibe thanks to the stunning photography by
Apollo Fields. Kayla and Jon were looking for a timeless style that fit them perfectly and pulled it off thanks to their handmade oyster seating chart that started it all.

“We both grew up in the same beach town, love the water, and really wanted to incorporate that into our special day. Jon also used to work on an oyster farm, we both love fishing with my dad and our families, and oysters help to filter the bay and keep our water clean, which is very near and dear to our hearts,” Kayla explains about their theme. But that’s not all — their wedding truly became a day about family. She goes on to say, “My father-in-law built the seating chart and our welcome signs and painted them. Jon and I collected the oyster shells, cleaned them, and painted a gold rim and arranged them on the board and then Nicole, our calligrapher, wrote on the top of it.”

With all that in mind, their color scheme became dusty blue, neutrals and gold. The bridesmaids donned beautiful and bold emerald green dresses and the groomsmen wore fittingly elegant tuxes.

For their flowers, Kayla and Jon had a mix of lisianthus, thistle, anemone, dahlias, queen Anne’s lace, and Veronica. They had small bud vases on each table mixed with gold candleholders and dusty blue candlesticks with Italian ruscus lining the center of the table. Kayla tells us, “They looked romantic and beautiful, yet simple and left plenty of room at the tables for conversation and to see everyone which was important to us. Additionally, we had some big blue recycled glass bottles with pampas grass tying into our theme.”

In lieu of a traditional cake with a formal cake cutting, this fun-loving couple opted for an ice cream bar instead, which turned out to be a huge hit among their guests according to Kayla. And it gave them more time on the dance floor, she explained.

And in keeping with the fun, party vibes, they skipped a formal entrance for their reception and walked right into the first dance. It is all about the dancing, after all, right?! And if you need a little musical inspiration, their first dance song was Still the One by The Orleans. “We’ve been dating since middle school and we are both old souls. This song was fun, upbeat, and felt true to us,” Kayla notes.

FAVORITE MEMORY

Of course, we simply had to know what their favorite memory from their wedding day was and it did not disappoint — it was as unique and beautiful as all their moments from the day. It was like we were there, after all, thanks to Apollo FieldsSo what was it exactly? Kayla says, “Our favorite memory was probably our first look. We shared oysters, sipped Clase Azul tequila that Jon gifted to me for graduating a few months earlier from anesthesia school, and read our own vows we wrote prior to our church ceremony. It was such a special moment and one we will remember forever. I also surprised Jon and had him turn around to see me, but instead it was a long board surfboard as a wedding gift. His face was priceless!

“Also it was POURING and so windy all day long and the rain stopped just in time for us to do our first look, go to the church, do our ribbon wand exit, and drive away in an old Mercedes convertible. The rain started again once we were at cocktail hour on the outside patio, but we already enacted our rain plan and rented the patio so it didn’t matter at that point anyway. It felt like someone above was looking out for us with that weather the way it cleared for the perfect moments.”

Advice to Other Couples

Kayla reminds, “No doubt about it, wedding planning can be stressful, BUT it doesn’t have to be all the time. Try to enjoy it, make decisions together, ask other people for advice and tips. And remember as long as at the end of the day you are getting to marry your best friend, the rest of the decisions truly don’t matter.”
