Wedding Planner Abbey Nims Shares Her Planning Journey: Selecting Save the Dates

Today’s topic is save the dates. What date? What even is it? What do I have to include? Can it be a postcard? Do people need to RSVP? AHHHHH!!!

To put it plainly, a save the date is exactly what it sounds like. And it doesn’t have to be anything more than that! If you want to send a postcard with an elephant on it that says “I’M GETTING MARRIED B*TCHES” nobody is going to stop you. But the biggest part of your save the date is actually picking the date.

Picking a date can be…hard. This is more than just your wedding day. It’s the day you’re going to start your life together and that is worth putting some thought into! Sometimes you can go with a date that is sentimental to you and your partner. Your existing anniversary, the day you got engaged, halfway between both of your birthdays, whatever. But I usually recommend that people think of the season they want to get married in. Think of the season that you want to be able to take a weekend getaway with your spouse to celebrate the years you’ve spent together. After all, this is a day that you will be celebrating for a long time!

For Jeremy and I, I originally wanted to get married on our 10 year dating anniversary, September 10th 2023. But, since we got engaged on Christmas Eve, that was a little unattainable for us financially. So, I started thinking about my dream day! I LOVE FALL, but I didn’t want to wait another whole year to get married (I’ve already been waiting 10!) and honestly, I’m a summer hater. I’m super sensitive to temperature changes, so when it’s too hot or too cold, I’m miserable. So, winter and summer are out. Fall is out. So, spring it is! The flowers are so pretty in the spring and it doesn’t really start reaching over 75/80 degrees here until late May/June, I’m not even mad.

This made landing on April a super easy choice. Then I started inquiring with venues asking about their availability for the entire month, which we then were able to use to narrow down a date.

Now that you have your date, let’s circle back to save the dates! You can absolutely get creative here! Tarot card with the date printed on it. If you’re super bougie, you can send a gift basket to everybody with custom items that has your date on each one. Or you can just send a cute photo of you both with a QR code linking to your wedding website. That’s what Jeremy and I did, and here it is!

Short and sweet. This will end up on someone’s fridge and then next January when they think “Hmm, I wonder if there is any new information on this” instead of having to wait for the formal invitation to get new information, they can just scan the QR, head to our website and see the venue, our registries, hotel block details, flight information, and anything else you decide to put on there!

When it comes down to it, the choice is yours. As I always say, your day your way!
